Whilst Laos at present scarcely features in the international championship circuit, the country has a few pretty and very worthy courses set within the lovely scenery that this remarkable country has to offer. Most of the golf courses are close to the Laotian capital, Vientiane.
The 27-hole course at SEA Games Golf Club was one of a number of venues designed and built especially to host the 25th South East Asian Games, held in 2009, and a milestone in the development of the country’s international sporting profile.
Making for a pleasantly challenging round, water features strongly as a design element in the championship course design, and although designed as scenic features rather than conventional obstacles in play, they are nevertheless a prominent hazard for wayward balls. The excellent floodlighting system also enables night play.
Predating the SEA Games, Laos’ original international championship course is the 18-hole 6,900 yard course at Dansavanh Golf and Country Club, beautifully set in the upland forest at Nam Ngum Lake, close to Phou Khao Khouay National Park, an hour’s drive from Vientiane.
The well-manicured course is hilly in places and play is defined by its eight dog-legs and the water obstacles on thirteen of its holes. The resort also boasts a hotel, restaurant, meeting rooms and a 24 hour casino amongst its additional facilities.
Close to Vientiane centre the 6,005 yard course at Lao Country Club is likewise a decoratively water-filled adventure that will play with your approach psychology. If watery courses aren’t your thing, the prominently bunkered Lao Inter Golf Club might provide an alternative challenge, its course notable for its unusual par 6 hole, and the on-green sand trap of its sixth hole.
If you are visiting Luang Prabang, the lovely natural feel of the beautiful 7,443 yard course at Luang Prabang Golf Club takes you on a very pleasantly scenic round, from the forested mountain backdrop of the early holes winding through the landscape to the final holes bordering the majestic Mekong River, an interesting and challenging course with small greens, water and sand obstacles, that will satisfy on many levels.
