It is possible to do cycling all over the Philippines.
However, the varied road surfaces and chaotic traffic of the main areas
restrict the possibilities of tour cycling, and mountain biking, often in
combination with other activities and sightseeing, is the focus of most two
wheeled adventures.
In the south of Luzon, a popular route winds its 300
kilometre, ten day way around some of the outstanding natural features of the
area, including Lake Taal and its volcano, Mount Banashaw, Mount Isarog and
majestic Mount Mayon, travelling through the plantations, rice paddies, villages and national parks of the terrain.
Because of the variety of experience potentials along the
way, this route provides plenty of additional interest, such as mountain biking
along numerous local trails, visiting forests, waterfalls, beaches, and
swimming with the whale sharks in Donsol. Other possible variants can include a trip to Mindoro and its beaches, and riding the coastal and river trails around Puerto Gallera.
If you’re looking for a shorter ride, any of these areas
can be investigated on an individual basis in a single day or two. Circumnavigating Mount Mayon is a popular cycling challenge and the route also serves as the basis of a triathlon course.
In the Luzon Cordillera, there are numerous mountain
biking trails, some of which can be very challenging. For the keen mountain
biker, the area readily lends itself to combining various trails into a multi-day
itinerary exploring this fascinating upland world.
In the north of Luzon, it’s possible to combine surfing
at La Union with some good mountain biking trails, typically in durations of around four days. Another northern mixed terrain nine day route takes in the heritage
sites of Vigan, and the trails around Cape Bojeador and Pagapud.
In southern Cebu, there are some excellent mountain
biking trails around the area of Moalboal, ranging from the easy to the extreme, following the valleys and rivers into the hills. The area is also a centre of adventure
activity, with easily arranged combinations including Canyoning, trekking,
Sea Kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving.
In Bohol, a classic seven day route takes in the rugged
terrain of Sagbayan, the coves and beaches of Anda, the famous Chocolate hills,
the tarsier Sanctuary, and the white sand delights of Panglao Island.
Palawan is a great location for mountain biking
excursions and multi day biking tours of the island, taking in Puerta Princesa,
Sabang, El Nido and Coron.
Another popular cycling trip is
the coastal circuit of Camiguin Island, a trip which can be extended by several forays into its interior.
