In northern Thailand, the area around Chiang Mai is the focus of much of the adventure activities available in the country, with mountain biking, abseiling, rafting and zip-lining all playful features of the local area. The city also has a fifty metre bungee jump.
For white water rafting and kayaking, the III and IV grade rapids of the Mae Taeng and Pai Rivers can be experienced in trips of one to two days. Far to the east of Chiang Mai, the Nam Wa River offers brilliant 3 day, II-IV grade rafting journeys.
The zip lines of the ‘Flight of the Gibbon’ extend for 5 kilometres through the canopy of the rainforest, featuring many runs of up to 800 metres, which provide not only great fun rides, but the chance to meet some of the gibbons and other wildlife of the forest.
Rock climbing is also a popular activity near Chiang Mai and the premier attraction is the Crazy Horse buttress near Mae On, with 180 routes of various grades to tackle. If you enjoy getting wet, the 50 metre abseil down Wachiratarn waterfall of Doi Inthanon should provide some excitement.
In southern Thailand, Krabi is the base for rock climbing, with some superbly scenic crags affording stunning Indian Ocean views while hanging above the incredible beaches of Tonsai, Railay and Phra Nang. There are also some incredible routes on Phi Phi and Koh Yao Noi, further south in the scenic splendour of Phang Nha Bay. This stretch of sculptural islands between Krabi and Phuket are also a great place to go sea kayaking, and enjoy the remarkable features of this delightful seascape.
In Phuket, the fifteen zip lines of the Flying Hanuman offers some great fun, while the island also has a fifty metre Bungee jump to get your pulse racing.
Jaw-dropping microlight air adventures are available in several Thai locations, including Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya.
