The currency of Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Dollar (HK$), with note denominations of $10, $50, $100, $500, and $1000. Coinage is incremented in values of 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, and $1, $2, $5 and $10.
Credit Cards are widely used and accepted in Hong Kong hotels, retail and service outlets and ATM machines are everywhere.
Traveller’s cheques are accepted by most banks, which also generally offer the best rates on currency exchanges, but some banks charge a fee if you are not an account holder.
Moneychangers are widespread, but rates are generally poor, particularly at the airport.
In Macau, the official currency is the Pataca, (MOP$), but Hong Kong Dollars are universally accepted, and indeed, ATM's will dispense currency in both, so travellers visiting from Hong Kong need not make any special arrangements. However, while most outlets will provide change in the same currency as used, some outlets may return change in local currency only.
The Pataca comes in Note denominations of 10 MOP$, 20 MOP$, 50 MOP$, 100 MOP$, 500 MOP$ and 1,000 MOP$. Silver coins of 1MOP$, 2 MOP$, 5 MOP$ and 10 MOP$ are also prevalent, along with copper coins of 10, 20 and 50 Avos, of which there are 100 to the MOP$.
