Although Cambodia has relatively few courses, of those it does possess are a few prized gems of the golfing world. This is particularly true at Siem Reap, close to the spectacular archaeological site of Angkor Wat and other incredible structures of the ancient Khmer Empire, where there are three very fine world-class golf courses to augment a visit to the famous monuments and other attractions around this remarkable area.
Designed by golfing legend, Sir Nick Faldo, the IMG managed Angkor Golf Resort's 7,279 yard 18 hole course opened in 2008 and is universally acknowledged as Cambodia’s finest. The beautifully presented course is challenging, with the strategic placement of obstacles requiring some forethought. Other facilities include a Modern Clubhouse, restaurants and a Golf Academy.
Opened in 2007, the first of Cambodia’s international golf courses, the Sofitel managed Phokeethra Country Club, has staged the PGA Cambodian Open and Jonnie Walker Classic Tournaments, and is characterised by water features on no less than 17 of its 18 holes, with the final green placed on an islet. The 72 par 7,145 yard course is served by a 5 star Clubhouse, including a fine restaurant, spa and shop.
The 7,396 par 72 international standard course at Booyoung Country Club is also a watery affair, with palm-fringed fairways edging the numerous meandering creeks some of which split the approach to the holes. The elaborate saunas are available for freshening up afterwards and the restaurant provides international and Korean dishes.
Further south, there are a few courses to be found around Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, with the Garden City Golf Club is regarded as one of the finest. The 7,631 yard course has two particularly challenging long par 4 tests at holes 6 and 9. The modern clubhouse, swimming pool, gym and restaurant ably reinforce the experience.
Another very fine course is the Jack Nicklaus designed Grand Phnom Penh Golf Club, but it’s a member’s only affair.
Two other courses in Phnom Penh provide for a good day’s game, The capital’s oldest, at the 7,077 yard Cambodia Golf and Country Club, and the 7,075 yard Royal Cambodia Golf Club. Both are relatively flat and moderately challenging courses, conveniently close to the city.

An interesting alternative to a flight arrival is possible by travelling to Siem Reap from Vietnam aboard a Mekong River cruise, which can also usefully be accomplished in reverse.
