After breakfast, drive from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.
Upon arrival, you’ll have time to relax before heading to the pier to board
your boat, departing for Koh Rong Island at 14h00, a trip of around 1hr. Upon
arrival the hotel staff will greet you and help you check in, and the rest of
evening will be your leisure time. An a la cart dinner menu is available at the
hotel restaurant, and you’ll spend the night on Koh Rong Island.
Until recently largely overlooked by the tourist trade, Sihanoukville is a
revelation. About 240km from Phnom Penh, the city itself is not that
attractive, but once you get past the industrial cluster of the deepwater port
and head east along the coast, you find four main beaches which get better as
you go. By the time you reach Sokha Beach, you find a classic tropical strand –
soft white sand, gentle limpid waves and palm trees. Skipping the long first
half of Ochheuteal Beach (good, but lined with shanty shelters), you arrive at
the top of the Queens Hill promontory with stunning views of seemingly endless
beaches in both directions.
