Thailand Old Kingdoms 14 Days

TOUR PROGRAMME

Day 1:
Arriving at Bangkok airport, you’ll be met and driven to your hotel, with time to relax and settle in before dining aboard a cruise of the Chao Phraya River.
Day 2:
Today, you’ll have a guided tour of the city’s highlights, beginning with a long-tail boat journey of the city’s canals and the best way to visit the grand structures of Wat Arun, the Royal Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and the Emerald Buddha. Later you’ll visit other city landmarks including Chinatown, Wat Traimit with its five and a half ton solid gold Buddha, and Wat Pho and its famous reclining Buddha.
Day 3:
Waterborne again, you’ll have a morning visit the floating market at Damnern Saduak, following which you’ll be driven to the town of Kanchanaburi, and a train ride of the infamous ‘death railway’ on the River Kwai. After lunch, a visit to the Tiger Temple, will be an opportunity to get close to its tame tigers. You’ll stay overnight in Kanchanaburi.
Day 4:
This morning, you’ll visit the graceful ruins of the former ancient capital of Siam, Ayutthaya, once an elegant and cultured city, of great power and renown, learning of its history and eventual downfall. After lunch, a visit to the former royal summer residence at Bang Pa In, before check-in at your Ayutthaya hotel.
Day 5:
After breakfast, you’ll travel northward to the ancient city of Kamphaeng Phet and its National Museum to view its collection of Sukhothai era artefacts, before travelling on to ancient Sukhothai itself, the first of Siam’s capitals, and your hotel.
Day 6:
If you’re up early, you can witness the Alms giving ceremony of offerings to the monks before breakfast, after which you’ll have a guided tour of the splendorous ruins of Sukhothai, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Day 7:
Today, you’ll be driven to visit the temple of Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang, an example of northern architecture in the Lanna and Burmese styles, and the sacred Thai pagoda of Phrathat Haripunchai, before heading to the northern city of Chiang Mai and your next hotel.
Day 8:
A walk to the summit of Doi Suthep rewards with superb views over Chiang Mai, following which you’ll have a guided tour of the city’s notable features and visit the skilled handicraft villages of Sankamphaeng and Borsang.
Day 9:
Travelling through the mountainous scenery of Mae Hong Son, you’ll visit the Mae Sa Elephant Centre and Baan Mae Yen hot springs, before arriving in Pai and your next hotel.
Day 10:
Continuing your journey through the northeaster landscapes of Thailand, you’ll vist the curious ‘fish cave’ and the mud spa at Phuklone Country Club, where you can enjoy a deeply relaxing massage, before venturing on to Mae Hong Son and your hotel. Later you’ll visit the town’s culturally important sites.
Day 11:
Following breakfast, you’ll be driven to the village of Baan Nai Soi to meet the people of the Karen tribe, remarkable for the tradition of their womenfolk, who wear often heavy brass rings upon their necks to elongate the appearance of perceived elegance. Later, you’ll take a long-tail boat trip down the Pai River, observing rural life unfold around you, before journeying on to Chiang Dao and your next hotel.
Day 12:
In the morning, a drive through the mountains stops on the banks of the Mae Kok River, with a visit to Tha Ton Temple. After lunch you’ll travel on to Mae Chan in the famous Golden Triangle, visiting the Opium Museum, for a glimpse of the trade which once dominated the region, before heading to Chiang Rai, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 13:
Today, you’ll be driven to Doi Tung, to visit the Royal Palace and Botanical Gardens, a project initiated by the late mother of the present King of Thailand to end the opium trade and reforest the hillsides. Later you’ll be driven to the airport for your flight to Bangkok, and check-in to your hotel.
Day 14:
Your time will be free at leisure in Bangkok until your driver arrives for the airport and your onward or departure connection.
